HISTORYOnce called Tartessus by the
Phoenicians who first appeared here in the 800
B.C., the city underwent great expansion under
the Roman rule commenced by Scipio in 206 B.C.
before falling to the Visigoths in the 6th
century. The arrival of the Moors in 711 A.D.
had contributed tremendously to the growth in
culture, economy, population and building
projects of the city they named Isbilia. For
centuries, the Christians, Jews and Arabs lived
together in harmony before king Ferdinand
reclaimed the city for the christian monarchs in
1248. It was then renamed Seville and became an
important gateway to the New World following
Columbus' discovery. Seville's splendor declined
in the 18th century but received a revival
through the Ibero-American Exposition in 1929.
With the dawn of democracy in the late 70s,
Seville has emerged yet again as an important
provincial capital and one of the most beautiful
cities of Spain.
